Nameserver Online Status
What This Check Does
The Nameserver Online Status check verifies that every active nameserver configured for your domain is responding to DNS queries. It sends test queries to each nameserver and reports any that fail to respond, are unreachable, or return errors.
This is one of the most critical checks in DNS Spy's Security Center. An offline nameserver can directly cause DNS resolution failures, leading to website downtime, email delivery problems, and service outages.
Why It Matters
Your nameservers are the foundation of your domain's availability. If even one nameserver goes offline, resolvers that happen to query it will experience failures or delays. If all nameservers go offline, your entire domain becomes unreachable — no website, no email, no services.
NIST SP 800-81, Section 3.3, emphasizes the importance of reliable nameserver architecture and recommends continuous monitoring of nameserver availability to ensure DNS service continuity. DNS Spy helps you comply with this guidance by detecting offline nameservers within minutes.
NIST SP 800-81 Compliance
Section 3.3 of the NIST Secure DNS Deployment Guide recommends maintaining reliable, redundant nameserver infrastructure. Offline nameservers represent a direct violation of these guidelines. DNS Spy's continuous monitoring ensures you detect and remediate nameserver outages quickly, maintaining compliance with NIST recommendations for nameserver architecture and availability.
Good vs. Bad Configuration
Bad Configuration
One of your three nameservers is offline and not responding to queries. Resolvers that select this nameserver will experience timeouts, causing slow or failed DNS resolution for your users.
Good Configuration
All configured nameservers respond promptly to DNS queries. Each nameserver returns consistent, correct answers. Example: ns1.example.com, ns2.example.com, and ns3.example.com all respond with valid SOA records when queried.
How DNS Spy Monitors This
DNS Spy sends DNS queries to each of your active nameservers at regular intervals. If any nameserver fails to respond or returns an error, DNS Spy immediately flags it and sends an alert. The dashboard shows the status of each individual nameserver, making it easy to identify which server needs attention. Historical data helps you track patterns and identify recurring outages.
