Namecheap Nameservers

Namecheap BasicDNS uses dns1.registrar-servers.com and dns2.registrar-servers.com. Domains on Namecheap Web Hosting DNS use dns1.namecheaphosting.com and dns2.namecheaphosting.com instead, and PremiumDNS uses its own set that requires an active PremiumDNS subscription.

Default nameservers (the same for every customer)

  • dns1.registrar-servers.com
  • dns2.registrar-servers.com

Where to see Namecheap's nameservers

In your Namecheap account, open Domain List, click Manage next to the domain, and look at the Nameservers section. The dropdown shows which Namecheap DNS option the domain uses.

Check which nameservers a domain uses right now

Your account shows what you configured. The registry shows what the internet actually uses, and the two can differ while a change is in flight. To see the live answer, query the NS records:

dig NS example.com +short

Or run a free DNS scan, which reads the delegation and every record from each authoritative nameserver, and use the DNS propagation checker with the NS record type to watch a change reach resolvers worldwide.

Good to know

  • Host records are not copied when switching between custom and Namecheap nameservers.
  • Domain Redirect, Email Redirect and Host Records only work on BasicDNS, PremiumDNS or FreeDNS.
  • Changes take up to 24 hours; switching between Namecheap's own DNS options usually applies within an hour.

What breaks when nameservers change

Changing nameservers moves every DNS record for the domain to a new provider at once. The common failures:

  • Email stops arriving because the MX, SPF and DKIM records were not copied to the new provider.
  • The website or a subdomain goes dark because one A or CNAME record was missed.
  • The domain fails to resolve for validating resolvers because an old DNSSEC DS record no longer matches.
  • For a day or two, some resolvers still ask the old provider, so edits made there keep showing up for some users.

DNS Spy checks every record on every authoritative nameserver at least every ten minutes and alerts you the moment one changes or disappears, so a migration mistake shows up before your customers notice. See how DNS monitoring works.

Frequently Asked Questions

Namecheap BasicDNS uses dns1.registrar-servers.com and dns2.registrar-servers.com. Domains on Namecheap Web Hosting DNS use dns1.namecheaphosting.com and dns2.namecheaphosting.com, and PremiumDNS uses a separate set. Check which option your domain uses in Domain List, Manage, under the Nameservers section. Read the dropdown rather than assuming, because each option uses a different pair.

Namecheap says nameserver changes can take up to 24 hours to spread, while switching between its own DNS options usually applies within an hour. Remember that host records are not copied when you switch between custom and Namecheap nameservers, so recreate them before the change goes live.

Domain Redirect, Email Redirect and Host Records only work while the domain uses Namecheap BasicDNS, PremiumDNS or FreeDNS. Pointing the domain at custom nameservers turns them off. Recreate the equivalent records at your new DNS provider, or switch back to a Namecheap DNS option to restore them.
